Construction of a 16-mile pipeline bringing mains gas to four historic whisky distilleries in some of the most remote parts of Scotland has seen Fulcrum short-listed for the Capital Project Management accolade at this year's Utility Week Achievement Awards – widely recognised as the UK utility industry’s Oscars.

The £7.6 million pipeline, jointly commissioned by distillers Chivas Brothers, Diageo and Angus Dundee, is believed to be the largest-ever delivered by an independent connections provider. It was completed six months ahead of schedule, on budget and with minimal highways disruption.

Commenting on Fulcrum’s achievement in reaching the finals, Utility Week Editor Ellen Bennett said: “The standard of entries for this year’s Capital Project Management award was incredibly high and all those who have been short-listed have demonstrated industry-leading levels of excellence.”

Delivery of the Fulcrum pipeline, which involved a team of specialist designers, a full-time on-site project delivery manager and a team of up to 30 construction engineers, enabled the trio of formerly ‘off-grid’ distillers to end reliance on high CO2 emission fuel oil and road-borne tanker delivers.

Some 95% of the pipeline involved laying under narrow local highways in remote rural areas bordering areas of outstanding natural beauty and included 100m high bridge crossings.

Fulcrum CEO Martin Donnachie commented: “This project was not only significant in its scale and importance to Fulcrum but has also, we believe, had a significant impact on the profile of the entire UK gas industry.

“It demonstrated the multiple benefits of natural gas to businesses with a massive importance to the UK economy – they in turn demonstrated their confidence in the benefits of switching to cleaner energy via a multi-million pound investment.”

Mr. Donnachie added: “We believe that this is a project that not only we, but the whole industry should be proud of – it has raised the profile of fuel conversion and the confidence of UK businesses to invest in it.”

  • Fulcrum won the Capital Project Management Award in 2013 for gas utility works completed at  the 2012 Olympic games, including the connection to the iconic Olympic Cauldron
  • The overall winner of Utility Week’s Capital Project Management Awards will be announced at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on December 8
